Maddie Smiles

Maddie Smiles

God works in mysterious ways. You never know what to expect. I can definitely relate due to an encounter that I had last Thursday.

This summer, I am interning at an advertising agency that is well connected to the city of Indianapolis. Because of this, I was graciously given the opportunity to attend a special fundraising event for Outside the Box; a non-profit that specializes in helping disabled Hoosiers. After hearing more about their mission and humble beginnings, I was inspired to take more action in helping around my community.

(Seriously, check out this organization. They are some of the coolest and most dedicated individuals I’ve ever met. Here’s a link to their website ->

Alongside Outside the Box (heh), I met Lacy Ross as I was leaving the event. At the time, I didn’t understand how similar our life stories were. It wasn’t until I contacted her and asked her about the non-profit organization she runs with her family that I realized how incredible her mission is.

Lacy and her family started “Maddie Smiles”; a non-profit dedicated to spreading love through random acts of kindness. It was created a few years ago after the passing of the Ross’s daughter, Maddie. Maddie was born with spina bifida as well as cerebral palsy. After asking Lacy about her sister, she replied that even though Maddie was non verbal and confined to a wheelchair, it never stopped her family from enjoying life to the fullest. She also mentioned that Maddie had her own language that the family understood.

(If you’ve ever spent any time with someone with special needs, you know just how special it feels to learn their language. It is always filled with love and an abundant amount of joy)

Needless to say, after hearing all about Maddie, I knew that I had stumbled upon something special. I highly recommend that you check out Maddie Smiles on the interwebs (Facebook page->, Website-> and practice expressing kindness in your community.

There is something beautiful about the craziness of life. You never know who you might run into or what you will find yourself doing. We can all learn to take a deep breath now and then and trust that everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.
